Vocabulary
Vocabulary encompasses words used in both writing and speech. In the classroom, students are required to know a variety of vocabulary, and this means more than just terms and definitions, but rather the ability to understand when reading and express their knowledge in writing and conversation. The University of Oregon emphasizes how important vocabulary knowledge is for learning in all forms, because vocabulary provides a strong foundation for all other areas. Oral language is a key component in vocabulary knowledge, and Sharon Taberski supports this with the ideas she shares in Comprehension from the Ground Up. Taberski emphasizes how essential talking is because it is a form of learning and practicing vocabulary. Talk and practice not only help children grasp new vocabulary words and ideas, but also help with reading and comprehension. It is vital for students to know and understand the words they are reading so that they can comprehend and absorb what they are reading. Reading, in addition, helps with vocabulary because it exposes children to new words that they may not experience in oral language. Expansion in vocabulary allows a student to expand their knowledge and abilities, and this will result in stronger readers, stronger writers, and stronger students overall.
