Phonics
Phonics is a method of teaching that involves connecting phoneme, sounds, to their graphemes, or letters. Phonics is tremendously important for reading because it allows students to map out letters and their sounds, which gives them the tools to decode words while reading, increasing their fluency. As the University of Oregon explains, phonological recoding is, "using systematic relationships between letters and phonemes to retrieve the pronunciation of an unknown printed string or to spell words." Patricia M. Cunningham, in Phonics They Use, mentions that phonics and its ties to fluency help students with word-identification accuracy. If a student is aware of the concepts encompassed by phonics, including long and short vowels, blends, digraphs, diphthongs, and "R" influenced vowels, they will be better prepared to decode words while reading and writing.
